Nestor Schpaliansky helps fighting Leukemia and other blood cancers
Hello everyone, my mission is to help raise funds to donate to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. These funds are going to be used to pay for research and patient treatment while I train to raise a 100 mile century ride in October 2003 in Sallisbury, MD.
Here are a few reasons why this commitment is so important to me and it should be to society: * Every five minutes, someone in the US learns they have leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, nearly 300 people a day. Thanks to research supported by LLS, the overall survival rates for the disease have more than doubled in the last 30 years. * Leukemia is the #1 killer of children, and it strikes ten times the number of adults. With recently developed treatments the survival rate for children has jumped from 4% in 1960 to over 80% today. For adults the percentage is 40%. * It is exciting to think this is one form of cancer that we may very well see a cure for within our lifetime, and some scientists think therein lies the secret to curing many other forms of cancer. Leukemia research seems to be considered the "window" to treatment and cure for all cancers. * OUR HONORED TEAMMATES! Two of them have survived many months of difficult treatment. I admire their strength of spirit and courage, and there is no doubt they are our my daily inspiration, as well as many others that I keep finding out are in treatment or in remission, or even the people that didn't have the chance to be with us today but gave their lives fighting cancer. Please get to know my family, they are lovely and awesome and they support my mission that takes away several hours of our time together, but we don't have a doubt and we all put our bit of contribution to accomplish it. |
